Railtrack, the owner of Britain's railway infrastructure, starts work on the refurbishment of St Albans city station forecourt this week. It is a part of a £400,000 scheme to improve the rail and bus interchange in the city centre.

Preparatory work started on site on Monday 10 March and the main work will begin on Monday 17 March. The work is scheduled to be completed in 12 weeks.

The station will benefit from a new bus terminal area with better information points for bus and rail travellers using an electronic passenger information point. It will provide timetable information on bus and rail services anywhere in the country.

Better lighting will also be provided and a new waiting area is to be built for taxis as well as new facilities for vehicles to pick up and set down passengers. Disabled access will also be improved.

The scheme is being funded jointly by Railtrack in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, St Albans District Council and Thameslink Rail.

During the building work Thameslink rail services will not be affected and any disruption to pedestrians and vehicles will be minimised.
